Redevelopment programme for Laganside unveiled
The historic Custom House Square area at Laganside is to get a £4 million facelift, it was announced today.
The development, which is due to start this Spring, will see Custom House Square pedestrianised and transformed into an attractive civic venue.
The new square will improve links between Belfast's main shopping area and the River Lagan and re-establish an historic public route along the line of the River Farset.
Once known as Belfast's equivalent to Speakers Corner in London, politicians and preachers would address crowds from the steps of the Lanyon building - which was built in 1854. Laganside Corporation now plans to revitalise the area and create a new public event area.
Secretary of State Paul Murphy, in a visit to the area today, said: "Custom House Square was once one of Belfast's busiest centres. Through the continued vision of the Laganside Corporation, this area will once again be restored to its former glory, creating an exciting outdoor venue for a range of events.
"This £4 million redevelopment project marks another important step in the process of physical, economic and social regeneration of the Laganside area of the city."
The square is home to some of Belfast's oldest buildings. These include the Albert Clock, dating back to 1864, the Custom House, which is 149 years old, as well as the city's oldest building McHugh's Bar, established in 1711.
The plans for the site comprise a 3,200 square metre public event space directly opposite Custom House, lined with trees and including a water feature. Special lighting will allow the venue to be used night and day. The full project is due for opening by Christmas 2004.
