Vandals Damage Diggers In Derry Graveyard

Vandals have caused damage totalling up to £2,000 to construction vehicles parked in a cemetery.

The windows of mechanical diggers were smashed at the graveyard on Lone Moor Road in Londonderry between Sunday afternoon and Monday morning.

Sinn Finn councillor Patricia Logue said there was "no excuse for this wanton act of vandalism" which had taken place on consecrated ground.

She said the machinery was being used to construct a new section of the City Cemetery.

A police spokesperson asked witnesses to contact officers at Strand Road PSNI station with any information that might lead to the people responsible being caught.

Ms Logue backed up the plea for information, saying: "There are bigger questions as a society to ask such as why people think it's OK to climb into the confines of a cemetery which is consecrated ground and go on a wrecking spree."
