Multi-Million Pound Orders Roll In For Bombardier

Belfast airplane manufacturer Bombardier Aerospace has secured orders worth nearly £80m for its new CSeries range.

A special facility for the range's wings is set to employ about 800 people.

The company has also announced that a conditional Chinese order has been firmed up and could eventually be worth up to £316m.

The CSeries customer has chosen to remain anonymous for now and has placed a conditional order for five CS100 and ten CS300 jetliners, worth about £77m.

Nine firm orders have been placed for the company's CSeries so far, with three additional conditional orders.

Clients include national carriers, a low-cost airline and leasing companies.

A spokeswoman for Bombardier Belfast said the CSeries order was an endorsement of the workforce's skills.

She said: "The CSeries aircraft wing programme will employ over 800 employees when we are at full production in a few years' time, and is further benefiting the local economy through the strong involvement of local companies."

The CSeries aircrafts will be up to 12,000lb lighter than other aircrafts with the same number of seats.

This will make the planes 15% cheaper to run and they will burn 20% less fuel.

They are scheduled to enter the market in late 2013.

First Minister Peter Robinson welcomed the orders, saying: "Bombardier is one of Northern Ireland's major employers and this announcement is a significant boost to the local economy. These orders are a tremendous endorsement of the technological expertise and capability available here and signals the continued success of this multinational corporation."
