Young workers given further protection

New measures to protect young workers aged between 16 and 17 from working excessive or unsociable hours were announced today by the Department for Employment and Learning.

The new regulations will come into operation on 6 April 2003 and will affect the working hours of those between minimum school leaving age and their 18th birthday. Their working time will be limited to 40 hours a week, eight hours in any one day and restricting night working between 10 pm-6am or 11 pm-7am.

As young people are a vulnerable section of the workforce, the department has said that it is "important that they get the protection they need whilst maintaining flexibility in the labour market".

In certain sectors which have particular operational needs young people may be permitted to work during specified hours of the night working restrictions, as listed above, but working between hours of midnight and 4am is prohibited except in exceptional circumstances.

Certain sectors may be permitted to work during specified hours of the nightworking restrictions, such as those employed in hospitals or similar establishments, agriculture, retail trading, seafishing, or newspaper deliveries.
