Drink-Driving Limits Could Be Reduced In NI

New drink-driving laws could include lower limits for all drivers, in a bid to reduce the number of people injured and killed on Northern Ireland's roads.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood launched a consultation today on proposals that would include random roadside breath tests.

Mr Attwood said: "In launching this consultation, I am taking an important step forward in tackling the problem of drink driving. Over the last five years 83 people have been killed and 917 seriously injured by drivers impaired by drink or drugs. This is totally unacceptable and I am determined to tackle this issue."

Late last year, Mr Attwood announced plans for the biggest shake up in drink driving laws since the alcohol limit was first introduced in 1968.

He has now said the bill should reach the Assembly by the end of this year.

Mr Attwood said penalties for people caught drink-driving more than once were among the things that needed to be firmed up.

He continued: "When the bill is introduced, it will also include legislation that will establish the most radical advances in driver training and improvements in new driver safety anywhere on these islands. This will build the argument for reductions in premiums and challenge the insurance industry to match our determination and drive down costs for young drivers. This is the most wide ranging and bold road safety initiative in more than a generation and it will save lives."

The consultation period begins on 10 July 2012 and ends on 5 October 2012.
