Teenager Escapes Blindness In Firework Attack

A teenage girl is recovering from burns to her face and head after a firework was thrown at her, the Mourne Observer has reported.

The 17-year-old's hair caught fire when a group of youths threw the banger at her and then ran away.

Doctors have confirmed that the girl would have been blinded if she had not been wearing contact lenses.

The lucky chance saved her sight in a completely unexpected attack, which occurred as she was eating her lunch in Downpatrick.

It seems to have been a random attack and although the police were alerted straight away, the culprits are still at large.

The burns victim’s family said it was vital the youths who threw the firework are caught.
