Lorry driver assaulted during north Belfast hijacking

A lorry driver was threatened at gunpoint and assaulted yesterday when a large quantity of cigarettes was stolen during a hi-jacking in north Belfast.

The 26-year-old man had completed a delivery to a 'Spar' supermarket on the Antrim Road around 1.30pm when he was confronted by an armed hijacker.

The driver was then ordered to take his lorry – registration number KLZ3131 – to Carlisle Circus onto the Shore Road to Pittstburg Street.

The driver remained in the cab of the lorry with the gunman while a large quantity of cigarettes were removed from the trailer by an unknown number of people.

After the cigarettes were stolen, the lorry driver was forced into the trailer and struck on the head with the gun.

The victim was bound and locked inside the lorry trailer until he was able to raise the alarm at around 3.45pm.

The gunman is described as 6ft tall, dark haired and of thin build. He was wearing a checked flat cap, big-rimmed sunglasses and bright orange woollen gloves.

Police have urged anyone with information to come forward.
