Free Public Wi-Fi Planned For Belfast
Plans are to be unveiled today for a city-wide free public wireless internet service in Belfast.
If successful, the scheme would mirror Bangor's free wi-fi throughout the town centre, which became operational last month.
The seaside town was the first place in Northern Ireland to provide free public wi-fi for shoppers, residents and visitors.
Many coffee shops and other businesses in Belfast provide wireless internet for their customers but the planned five-kilometre wide network, due to come into place by 2015, would be different as no purchase would be required for somebody to get online using a laptop or smartphone.
Belfast City Council has already received £6m in funding and is hoping to get more cash through a future bid.
Belfast is one of ten UK cities to have won 'super-connected city' status from the Westminster Government in the 2012 Budget.
All cities involved are prioritised to get ultra-fast broadband with a minimum download speed of at least 80Mbps.
The maximum Belfast can be awarded for the project is £13.7m.
Broadband speeds in Northern Ireland have drawn criticism for being lower than in the rest of the UK, and Belfast speeds are higher in general than those in rural areas such as Fermanagh and Down.
