Olympic Torch Crosses Border For The Day
The Olympic torch left Northern Ireland to visit Dublin today, after a symbolic ceremony at the border.
Boxer Wayne McCullough from County Antrim passed the torch to former team-mate Michael Carruth, from Dublin, south of Newry.
In Dublin, the torch was carried over the glass roof at GAA home Croke Park by hurler Henry Shefflin, and was received by dignitaries including Irish president Michael D Higgins.
The president of the Olympic Council of Ireland told the BBC the torch had come to Ireland after a special derogation was granted.
Pat Hickey said: "We will never have the Olympic Games in Dublin and the nearest we are ever going to come to it is the London Games, so to have the torch relay on our part of the island is quite unique and historical."
Sports Minister for Northern Ireland Carál Ní Chuilín said the "shared event" was "symbolic".
She said: "The journey of the Olympic Torch demonstrates that sport knows no boundaries."
After passing through Newry and Lisburn the torch will arrive at Belfast's City Hall for a free celebratory concert.
Featuring Bellaghy's General Fiasco, it will take place from 6pm to 8pm and be broadcast on the BBC.
Belfast's new mayor Gavin Robinson will receive the torch at 7.20pm.
Tomorrow the relay visits towns from Newcastle to Ballymena before leaving for Scotland.
Looking back on the torch’s time in Northern Ireland, Ms Ni Chuilín said: "There have been moments of joy, poignancy and a shared sense of community."
