Wells Hopes Strike Action Doesn't Damage Reputation Of Doctors
Vice Chairman of the Assembly’s Health Committee Jim Wells has commented on the result of the British Medical Association ballot of doctors which see a planned day of industrial action in June.
Speaking today the South Down MLA said: "The Health Service is one of the most valued parts of society, and something of which the United Kingdom is very rightly proud. Similarly doctors and other health professionals working within the Health Service provide an invaluable service to the public and deserve the support and respect of us all.
"During these difficult economic times however it can be difficult for the public to understand how industrial action can be sanctioned over a pension which is well in excess of what many people would ever earn during their working life.
"Doctors will also receive that pension at an earlier age than many people working in other sectors. Therefore whilst there is a recognition of the absolutely vital role which doctors perform within our society, there are concerns about the impact this will have on patients given there could be some difficulties in distinguishing between what is an urgent or non-urgent case.
"I would hope that this strike does not damage the reputation of doctors and the wider Health Service in the public mind, and that ultimately this industrial action could be avoided."
