Police Under Attack During Trouble In Newry
Police have come under attack in a riot in Newry.
One officer suffered minor injuries when petrol bombs, stones and bricks were thrown at police at Camlough Road, near Daisy Hill Hospital, last night, in disruption lasting until about 11pm.
Mayor of Newry Charlie Casey said it was the second or third security alert in that area in the last few months.
The trouble came after a security alert.
A suspicious object was declared a hoax after a controlled explosion was carried out.
The PSNI are now investigating the attack on officers as well as the hoax incident.
Newry and Mourne PSNI area commander, Chief Inspector David Beck, said: "You see again a small criminal element intent on bringing mayhem and disruption with absolutely nothing left to offer."
