NI Beaches Haul In Blue Flag Awards

Hot temperatures and blue skies have hit Northern Ireland this week and it's good news for sun-worshippers as more than twenty beaches have been deemed clean and safe.

Environment Minister Alex Attwood handed out 23 awards today to beaches and marinas.

Northern Ireland now has 11 Blue Flag beaches, marked with an international standard for water quality and lifesaving equipment and two Blue Flag marinas.

Seven resort and rural beaches received the Seaside Award.

Crawfordsburn Beach, where the bumper awards were presented, was given its first ever Blue Flag.

Mr Attwood said: "We all have a role to play in keeping our wonderful coastal areas clean. We must all be proud of our coastline and encourage others to come and enjoy it."

And he launched a new beach directory website for Northern Ireland, which provides maps and information with events listings at www.beachni.com.
