Widow "Disgusted" at 14-Year Minimum Sentence for Husband's Killer

The widow of a murdered policeman has said she is "disgusted" at the sentence handed out to one of her husband's killers.

Stephen Carroll (48) was shot dead in Craigavon in March 2009 and two people were found guilty of his murder in March this year.

His widow Kate said outside court that she was disgusted at the 14 year minimum term imposed on John Paul Wootton, who she said had shown no remorse. She added that the term would not act as a sufficient deterrent to other young people.

Wootton was 17 at the time of the shooting.

Brendan McConville (41), also convicted, will serve a minimum of 25 years before he is considered for parole.

In a statement, the Police Service of Northern Ireland said they would "take time to study the sentencing comments and the custodial terms imposed."
