€115m Abbott investment to create 950 jobs

Leading world healthcare company, Abbott Laboratories is to invest €115 million investment in a greenfield site in Longford and an expansion in Sligo.

The new investments will create a total of 950 new quality jobs over the next five years, 600 in Longford and 350 in Sligo.

Eighty per cent of the new jobs will be for graduates from third-level institutions. The investments, which are being implemented by Abbott's Diagnostics Division, will make the facilities key international manufacturing sites for Abbott's diagnostics test kits for a wide range of diseases and medical conditions.

Making the announcement, Tánaiste Mary Harney said: "Abbott is one of the largest healthcare employers in Ireland and works closely with IDA Ireland on maximising the benefits which Ireland can offer for continued growth. The new facility at Longford and the Sligo expansion will include skills-based, higher value processes. In addition to manufacturing, the fully integrated operations will have a high level of technical support activities.

"The employment build-up at both will be very rapid. Clearly such significant developments will have a major, beneficial impact on the Midlands and North West regions within the next couple of years."

In Longford, where €70 million of the investment will create 600 new jobs in a new diagnostics facility, half the jobs will be recruited by the end of 2004.

In Sligo, the €45 million planned investment will add 350 new jobs at Abbott's existing diagnostics facility, with 250 people expected to be recruited by the end of 2004.
