Calls For Legislation To Track Stolen Metal
SDLP South Down MLA Karen McKevitt has called for legislation to be introduced to enable the tracking of metal following a spate of metal thefts in her constituency, the latest of which occurred at Downpatrick and County Down Railway museum on Saturday.
Mrs McKevitt said: "The increase in metal theft in our area is extremely alarming and spans from manhole covers to components of a railway at our fantastic local museum.
"Not only do these thefts pose a safety risk to people, but they are an attack on our tourism infrastructure and on our local heritage.
"I believe that legislation should be brought forward to enable the tracking of metal so that people do not end up with stolen goods and those responsible for these crimes can be traced more easily by police and be punished for their crimes.
"I appeal for people working in scrap yards, particularly, to be vigilant and to alert the police if they come across any metal pieces which they think may have come from a railway."

Crushed Beer Kegs Discovered In Armagh
Police are appealing for information after over a tonne of crushed beer kegs were discovered in County Armagh. 61 kegs which were not crushed and 19 gas cylinders were also found during searches around Middletown. The kegs have been known to be sold for their scrap metal value. Police are urging anyone with information to contact them.

Translink Urges Motorists To Avoid Risk Taking Around Railway Tracks
Translink has issued a reminder to motorists to avoid taking risks around railway tracks following a number of incidents of vehicles being hit by level crossing barriers. Last year 36 individuals were prosecuted for incidents including trespass, failure to observe a warning system and bridge strikes.
