SF criticised over Policing Board stance

SDLP leader Mark Durkan has criticised Sinn Fein over its reluctance to join the Policing Board during a meeting with Congressmen in Washington today.

Mr Durkan, who claimed credit for delivering huge changes to policing in Northern Ireland since creation of the Policing Board 15 months ago, accused Sinn Fein of preparing to join the Policing Board after "key battles had already been won" by the SDLP.

"Sinn Fein says that the SDLP jumped too soon when we decided to join the Policing Board," he said.

"Did we jump too soon when we got a new name, badge and flag? Did we push too when we got a new chief constable to replace the discredited Ronnie Flanagan?"

"Using the excuse that you should not join the board until all Patten is implemented is like saying you should not take part in the executive until all of the agreement is implemented. It is a flawed argument."

In a further round of meetings, Mr Durkan will meet with the US President's special ambassador Richard Haass.

Elsewhere, Sinn Fein's Gerry Kelly has called for an independent public inquiry into the murders of solicitors Pat Finucane and Rosemary Nelson. He urged for the removal of the Special Branch which he described as a "malign influence".
