NI WAITING LISTS CONTINUE TO RISE
NORTHERN Ireland’s waiting lists for hospital treatment is increasingly becoming a major problem according to new figures that were published on Tuesday June 12.
Statistics for the end of March revealed there were almost 52,000 patients waiting for treatment.
The findings also show that the in-patient waiting list total has increased by 2,076 since December.
The Minister for Health, Social Services, Bairbre de Brun, said: “The amount of activity within the hospital system has been increasing considerably. Many operations have had to be cancelled, particularly during the winter months, to make way for emergency cases. The underlying problem, however, is the underinvestment in health and social services in recent years and we need to put this right.”
The Minister pointed out that she had already taken significant action on waiting lists. She said: “Last September I set out a comprehensive, long-term plan for reducing waiting lists. Over the next three years, I want to see waiting lists down by 25 per cent, to 39,000.
An extra £8 million is available this year for waiting list action. But more will be needed, and I will be continuing to press my Ministerial colleagues for the resources that are needed.” (CD)
