WEEKLY FARMING PAPER GOES UNDER
THE Belfast Telegraph’s weekly agricultural publication ‘Farm Trader’ is to cease production after its final edition next week.
The decision to drop the paper was taken as a result of what was described as “no foreseeable growth in the local farming publication sector”.
Farm Trader, launched in May 1996, quickly established itself as an authoritative and comprehensive farming newspaper.
It was best known for its specialist writers, news coverage and advertising platforms.
The paper has suffered financial problems compounded by a series of crises in the farming industry, ranging from BSE to the on-going foot-and-mouth outbreak.
A spokesman for the Belfast Telegraph Newspapers Limited, which was bought over last year for £300 million by Sir Anthony O’Reilly’s Independent News & Media Group, said there would be no compulsory redundancies. It is understood that staff at Farm Trader will continue to be employed by the company.
The June 21 edition of the paper, which had a five-year run, will be the last. (AMcE)

Agriculture Minister Edwin Poots has announced the allocation of £6 million for the Environmental Farming Scheme (EFS). Making the announcement, Minister Poots said: "I am delighted to confirm that we have processed 92% of all EFS Wider and Higher 2021 claims and where a payment is due to these businesses they have been made.
