NICHSA WELCOMES RESULTS OF STROKE TRIAL

THE Northern Ireland Chest Heart & Stroke Association (NICHSA) has welcomed the results of a trial investigating how to reduce the risk of a second stroke for those who have already suffered a stroke.

The important trial has been carried out in a number of specialist Centres worldwide including the Belfast City Hospital. The results are to be announced at a major International Conference in Milan.

The results suggest that the use of a certain blood pressure reducing treatment can reduce the risk of subsequent strokes by up to 28 per cent. Furthermore, the risk of a heart attack could be cut by 38 per cent for those who had already suffered a stroke.

Andrew Dougal, Chief Executive of NICHSA, said: This is good news for reducing the risk of second strokes or heart attack among those who have already suffered a first stroke. It is encouraging to know that some patients from Northern Ireland may have already benefited from this treatment.

“I cannot over emphasise the importance of seeking urgent medical advice if you are concerned that you may have suffered from a mini stroke. Warning signs include – sudden weakness in an arm or a leg, sudden loss of vision in one eye or sudden loss of speech. Even if these signs resolve, you still need urgent medical advice.” (CD)
