Mother And Daughter Killed In House Fire
A mother and daughter have died following a house fire in County Tryrone at the weekend.
Elizabeth McGirr, 71, and her daughter, Deirdre, 38, died in the blaze at Dunlea Vale, Dungannon, at about 10pm on Saturday.
It is understood the mother, who lived nearby and had recently suffered from a stroke, was visiting her daughter when the fire started. They were both trapped inside the top flat of the four-flat complex. A man in his 30s was also in the house - he managed to escape unhurt.
Local Sinn Féin councillor Bronwyn McGahan said the local community was "deeply shocked", adding that the family was well-known and liked in the area.
"We just don’t know how or why this happened. It was a very intense fire,” said Ms McGahan.
Police are working to establish how the fire started- they are also appealing to anyone who noticed any unusual activity in the area or who has any information to contact them.
