Belfast BMI Staff Fear Job Losses
British Midland Staff at George Best Belfast Airport have entered into talks with the new owners over fears of possible job losses.
About 100 staff employed by BMI in Belfast were told on Thursday last that their jobs could be at risk.
This news follows British Airways being bought over by BMI earlier this month in a £172.5m deal.
Unite Union, who represents some of the staff who fear redundancy, said the consultation proposes the full integration of BMI mainline into British Airways securing approximately 1,500 jobs, but the integration proposals could result in up to 1,200 redundancies overall.
Unite national officer Oliver Richardson said: "BMI's future has been secured but we are very saddened at the scale of the jobs losses being proposed. Unite will be fighting to maintain as many jobs as possible and ensure that where vacancies exist people can be placed into suitable roles within BA.
"The job losses will take place over a number of months and we will be seeking to use this time to mitigate the impact of the cuts. We are also mindful of the fact that additional jobs need to be secured at BMI regional and BMIbaby which still face an uncertain future."
