Newton Expresses Disappointment At Job Losses
East Belfast MLA Robin Newton has expressed disappointment following the announcement of the 90 jobs being lost at George Best Belfast City Airport after the purchase of BMI by British Airways (BA).
The local MLA said: "It is a fact that in today's sophisticated, competitive and cut-throat economy there will be continual rationalisation of industry sectors through mergers and acquisitions'. These usually lead to job losses through redundancies and pay offs which generally are at the operative ends of the company pay scales.
"The potential of 90 local people losing their jobs is an unattractive prospect in today’s difficult economic circumstances. For these employees and their families this will be a testing time. Getting a new job will require assistance and support from the company and from the government agencies.
"BA, a very successful global organisation, should lend a hand to the redundant staff and provide whatever help is required to secure future employment. British Airways could confirm their bona-fides as a caring company deserving of customer support by providing professional help to the 90 staff."
