NORTEL TO MAKE FURTHER JOBS CUTS
TELECOMMUNICATIONS company Nortel has announced it is to make a further 330 people redundant at its Northern Ireland plant in Monkstown.
This is the fourth time the company has cut jobs at the factory this year. The company blamed the continuing global downturn in the demand for telecommunications equipment for the job cuts. They mean that from a peak of 2,400, the workforce at Monkstown will have fallen to 1,600.
Until only a few months ago, Nortel was involved in a massive recruitment drive as increasing use of the internet led telecommunications companies to invest heavily in their infrastructure.
However, a slowdown in demand for internet-related equipment has led to a programme of jobs cuts and contraction which has hit the company worldwide.
However, earlier this month, Nortel won the Northern Ireland Exporter of the Year award. The company, which is a subsidiary of the Canadian-owned global high-tech corporation, received the honour at a gala presentation at the Waterfront Hall in Belfast. (MB)
