FURTHER TENSION IN NORTH BELFAST

TENSIONS in north Belfast continue to run high after 100 protestant residents blocked a road on Tuesday evening and a shot was fired into a house in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

Both incidents took place in the Oldpark area. Protestant residents said they were protesting against what they claim are attacks from nationalist gangs on a near nightly basis. They called for more protection from the RUC and an extension of the peaceline, which separates the two communities, to try to protect their homes. The protest lasted for around one hour before residents dispersed peacefully.

Meanwhile, the shots fired on the lower Oldpark injured a 31-year-old man as he stood in the kitchen of the house at Rosapenna Street at around 12.30 in the morning.

Three children, aged seven, 10 and 15 were in the house at the time of the attack, along with five adults. The Catholic man was treated in hospital for a bruised back, but later discharged.

It is thought the gunman scaled the peace wall which runs behind the property. Residents blame loyalists for the attack. (MB)
