NI Birth Trends Change In 2011
The amount of births registered in Northern Ireland have remained similar to that in 2010, but new trends toward later childbearing and births to unmarried couples are continuing.
In total 25,300 live births were registered in Northern Ireland in 2011, a similar number to 2010.
Continuing the trend towards later childbearing, last year half of all babies were born to mothers aged 30 or more.
Meanwhile in the lowest number saw in 35 years the amount of births to teenage mums continues to fall. Last year there were 1,170 births to teen mums.
But in the highest figure ever 42% of births were to unmarried parents.
These findings are contained in provisional 2011 birth statistics released today by the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA).
Dr David Marshall from NISRA said: "While the number of births remains similar to the 2010 figure and has been broadly stable over the last five years there are underlying changes. The number of births to older mothers is rising and the number to younger mothers, especially teenage mothers, is falling. One consequence of the increasing number of older mothers is an increase in multiple births. Today one birth in every 10 is to a mother who was born outside the UK and Ireland, a marked change from a decade ago."

There are opposing views today on the extent of a 'crisis' facing Craigavon Area Hospital's maternity unit. Almost a year after the issue was last raised, the midwifery professional body, the Royal College of Midwives (RCM), is again at odds with the officials on staffing levels in the top Co Armagh hospital.

Fresh Appeal To Victims And Survivors Of Mother And Baby Homes
The PSNI have made a fresh appeal to victims and survivors of Mother and Baby Institutions, Work Houses and Magdalene Laundries in Northern Ireland to come forward. Police launched an investigation into allegations of abuse within these institutions on 6th October 2021.
