SDLP Votes Against High-Earners' Tax Cut
SDLP Leader Alasdair McDonnell MP MLA led all three SDLP MPs to vote against the reduction of the top rate of tax, as the Coalition's budget continues to go through the House of Commons.
Following last night's vote, Dr McDonnell said: "My party colleagues and I were proud to support the SNP’s motion against this scurrilous leg-up for the wealthiest in society.
"The Chancellor expects us to blithely accept this tax cut for top earners – a decision emanating from a cabinet with a huge preponderance of millionaires among its number – while telling us that a £1000 uplift in the basic personal allowance is the solution to poverty in the UK.
"The truth is that, with the rising cost of living, the insistence of raising fuel duty in August and the so-called ‘granny tax’ on the cards, the worst-off will still be poor while the high rollers can enjoy their additional untaxed wealth.
"A cut in the top rate of tax is not some kind of wealth-creation panacea which will encourage tax exiles back to open their wallets – it is, first and foremost, a belt-loosener for the Chancellor’s friends in the city."
