SF Pledges Continued Support For Lagan Brick Workers
Representatives of the Lagan Brick workers met with Sinn Féin TD Caoimhghín Ó Caoláin and six party councillors on Monday to update them on the long running dispute at the brick manufacturing plant in Kingscourt, Co. Cavan.
At the meeting the workers informed the politicians of the continued intransigence being shown by the management of Lagan Brick in a dispute which arose from the company’s failure to pay established redundancy payments to its former employees.
On Saturday (24th March) Lagan Brick workers took part in a solidarity protest outside the home of the managing director of Vita Cortex, Ian Kirby, in Trim, Co. Meath. The protest marked the 100th day of the Vita Cortex dispute which also involves workers taking industrial action to secure their rightful redundancy payments.
On 6th February SIPTU stated that it would be seeking the intervention of the Labour Court in the Lagan Brick dispute following the break down of talks at the Labour Relations Commission.
On 29th February the employers representative organisation, IBEC, confirmed that Lagan Brick had refused to attend the Labour Court.
In a ballot conducted on 1st March, SIPTU members in Lagan Brick voted almost unanimously to take strike action in response to the company’s decision to ignore standard industrial dispute resolution procedures.
