FIRE DESTROYS BAR IN DUNGIVEN

AN investigation is being carried out into the cause of an overnight fire which destroyed a bar and a restaurant at a County Londonderry landmark.

An adjoining hostel had to be evacuated and up to 10 people had to be moved during the blaze at the Castle Inn in Dungiven.

The fire, which was discovered shortly before 2am on Wednesday morning, was only finally extinguished by the local fire brigade in Dungiven around Wednesday lunchtime. A forensic examination of the site was carried out later in the day.

Fire Brigade Assistant District Commander William Lynch who was first on the scene said that the fire was particularly dangerous and well alight when they arrived. He said that their main concern was the welfare of the residents and staff in the adjoining hostel.

Fire brigade sources say at least seven fire engines were used to put out the blaze. The Castle Inn bar, which used to be a ballroom, will have to be demolished as the wall structures are unstable and the roof has caved in. The fire, which ripped through the bar, also burnt out a brand new car which was on exhibit as a prize to be won for a local bingo competition.
