'Quietest St Pat's Day In Years', Say Uni Officials

The University of Ulster has welcomed one of the quietest St Patrick's Day's in recent years.

University officials had previously warned their students that riotous and disruptive behaviour would not be accepted and that harsher punishments would be handed out to anyone identified to be involved in such behaviour.

This St Patrick's Day has been branded as "largely peaceful" with the weekend in the heavily-populated student area of the Holylands going off with only a few hitches.

Some arrests for disorderly behaviour and one for drug offences were made in the area however the general thought is that that level of anti-social behaviour has greatly declined in comparison to previous years.

A multi-agency task force comprising police, City Council and university representatives has been in place since Thursday night to keep the calm.

The PSNI said it was "content" with the operation, adding: "Compared with previous years the levels of anti-social behaviour and general disruption to the Holylands area were greatly reduced."

Back in 2009 violence erupted in the area with police pelted with bottles and fireworks.
