Calls For Minister To Clarify True Job Creation Figures

SDLP South Down MP Margaret Ritchie has called on Enterprise Minister Arlene Foster to offer a real clarification of how many jobs the Executive seeks to create with its Economic Strategy.

Speaking after the strategy was passed, Ms Ritchie said: "While we support the broad thrust of the Strategy, I was concerned that the Minister was unable to clarify the issue of job creation.

"Her strategy document indicated that 114,000 people would be moved from benefits into employment, but elsewhere, it seems that figure could be as low as 25,000.

"When I asked her to make the true position clear, she fudged the issue.

"Job creation is key to the revitalisation of the North’s economy and, if confidence in that economy is to be reinvigorated, then the true scale of what jobs we can expect to be created by the Executive must be made clear."
