Newtownards Fire Suspicious

Police are treating a fire, which broke out in Newtownards last night, as suspicious. Three oil tanks, two cars, a shed and fences were a blaze when fire crews arrived at the scene at Manor Park. Four houses were damaged as a result and several people also had to be treated for smoke inhalation. Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

School Boy Charged With Riotous Behavior

A 13-year-old school-boy from County Donegal has appeared at Londonderry Magistrates' Court. He was charged with offences connected to disturbances in the Madams Bank Road area of the city on Sunday. The schoolboy from Newtowncunningham is charged with committing riotous behaviour and with causing criminal damage to a police landrover. He was released on bail and was told not to enter Northern Ireland except to attend court appearances.

UK Airlines Urge Osbourne To Not Raise Flight Duty

The UK’s four largest airlines have urged George Osborne to reconsider plans to raise air passenger duty by almost 50% by 2016, calling for the duty to stay at its current level in the upcoming budget. The airlines said the rises in duty were pricing families out of flying. "That means fewer visitors to the UK, which destroys jobs in our tourism, aviation and hospitality industries."

Call For NI Air Passenger Duty To Be Scrapped
Air Passenger Duty on all flights from Northern Ireland's airports should be scrapped, according to the Northern Ireland Affairs Committee. The report by the group of MPs said that the tax was much higher in Northern Ireland than in the Republic of Ireland which was ultimately damaging to the local economy.

Police Officers Disciplined For Failing To Tell Doctor About Woman's Head Injuries
Two police officers have been disciplined after they failed to let their colleagues and a police doctor know that a woman had sustained a head injury, a Police Ombudsman investigation has concluded. The woman died from bleeding to the brain on 24 February 2014, the day after she suffered the injury.

ASSEMBLY CREATE AWARD TO HONOUR FIRE SERVICE
THE Northern Ireland Fire Service is to receive the first ever award given by the province's devolved assembly. An illuminated scroll is to be presented to Chief Fire Officer John McClelland on Tuesday, by assembly speaker Lord Alderdice in tribute to the sacrifice made by fire fighters over the years.

Man Arrested Over Attempted Murder Of Off-Duty Police Officer
A man has been arrested in connection with the attempted murder of an off-duty police officer in Co L'Derry. A viable under-car bomb was discovered outside a house in the Ardanlee area on 22 February last year. Army bomb disposal experts attended the scene. No-one was injured.
