NEW LEGISLATION ALLOWS CARER’S LEAVE

NEW legislation has been implemented for workers in the Republic of Ireland allowing them to avail of leave from their job should they need time to care for someone in need of full time attention.

The Carer’s Leave Act 2001, which has been introduced by Tom Kitt, Minister for Labour, aims to complement the Carer’s Benefit legislation as introduced last October.

Outlining the main provisions of the Act, Minister Kitt said: “The Act delivers on the undertaking given by the Government in the Programme for Prosperity and Fairness. It allows employees to leave their employment temporarily to provide full-time care for a period of up to 65 weeks.

"The Act is further recognition of the important role played by carers in our society and we must continue to provide support and practical assistance to these carers. The particular piece of legislation will make it possible for workers to make the temporary choice of becoming a carer without loss of employment and where possible care recipients may be cared for in the home."

"One of the main provisions in the Act will allow carers to work for up to 10 hours per week, under Regulations made by the Minister for Social, Community and Family Affairs. This will allow employers avail of the services of valued employees on a part-time basis while, at the same time, recognising the sensitivities of individual situations."

A number of employees are already absent from their employment in caring situations under arrangements agreed with their employers. Minister Kitt urged employers involved in such arrangements to honour such commitments, with the passing of the Act.

A copy of the Act together with the main provisions and an Information Booklet are being made available on the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment’s Website at www.entemp.ie/publications. The Information Booklet will be available in published form within the next fortnight. (CL)
