Nissan To Announce New Car To Be Built In Sunderland
Nissan’s new compact car, the Invitation, will be built in its UK factory in Sunderland.
It will create 2,000 jobs and provide a boost to a region hit hard by the recession and spending cuts.
Business secretary Vince Cable will make the official announcement later today at the Geneva Motor Show. The expansion by Nissan has been underwritten by £9m from the government’s regional growth fund.
"The decision [from Nissan] is another clear vote of confidence in Britain's manufacturing industry,” he will say, “and vindicates the government's decision to put support for manufacturing at the core of its economic strategy."
Nissan has said that 400 jobs will be created in the Sunderland factory and a further 1,600 in the local supply chain.
The expansion will see the UK Nissan workforce expand to a new high of more than 6,000 with Nissan’s head of European manufacturing, Trevor Mann, saying that it would maintain Sunderland’s position as the UK’s largest car factory.
"I'm delighted that Sunderland has secured what will be another very important model for Nissan in Europe," he said.
Nissan join a growing list of British car manufacturers creating jobs. Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is to create 1,750 new jobs and Toyota has announced plans for 1,500 new jobs at its Burnaton plant.
