SAFETY CALLS OVER TWELFTH OF JULY DEMONSTRATIONS

MORE than 50,000 Orangemen and band members are expected to take part in the12th July demonstrations across Northern Ireland.

One thousand lodges from 120 districts will be headed by over 1,000 bands, with the biggest parades in Belfast and Londonderry

Chief Superintendent Stewart Tosh, RUC Foyle District Commander, said that responsibility for parades passing off peacefully throughout Londonderry not only rested with the police but with the parade orgainsers.

Meanwhile, the Northern Ireland Fire Authority Divisional Officer Gordon Latimer, who is responsible for safety in Belfast, has issued safety warnings for those attending 11 July bonfire events throughout the province. The fire safety chief said: “It is very important that parents supervise their children and keep them a safe distance from fire. We are appealing to people to take care as there is a very real danger that these structures will collapse and I have no doubt that people will get hurt.

“We do not have any statutory powers regarding the bonfires, all we can do is offer advice. Unfortunately last year there were 55 incidents when our fire officers came under attack - please respect our fire officers, we are not there to spoil anybody’s enjoyment.”

The Lord Mayor of Belfast Jim Rodgers expressed concern in regard to one particular bonfire erected in the middle of a building site adjacent to Tate’s Avenue. The srtucture, which is a staggering 70 feet high, has taken weeks to create and is expected to be over 100 feet tall when completed.

Mr Rodgers said he believed the bonfire was too big and should be reduced in size. (AMcE)
