UK REPORT SHOWS E-BUSINESS FAILS TO CATER FOR ALL
THE Usability Company has issued a report highlighting the potential dangers faced by UK business if they fail to ensure that their web sites are accessible to all.
Produced in collaboration with the Digital Media Access Group, ‘Web Accessibility Problems, Issues, Solutions and The Future’ provides guidelines for UK e-businesses to ensure their product and service offerings are accessible to disabled users who may not be able to use e-commerce sites at present.
Catriona Campbell, CEO, The Usability Company said: “Failing to address the needs of more than one million members of the UK’s population means that UK businesses are missing out on a sizeable revenue stream. In addition to this, businesses should consider the potential legal implications in denying access to these groups.
“Web accessibility for the disabled appears at the bottom of the list of priorities (if at all) for the majority of businesses. Perhaps the threat of litigation will make people think twice before designing an inaccessible interface. As the Government continues to drive web access for all, this is one issue that isn’t going to go away.”
The launch of the report coincides with a recent decision made by the US Federal Government, imposing penalties on government-run sites denying equality of access for disabled users. (AMcE)

Oftel reports 45% of UK homes have Internet access
Latest figures from the telecommunications regulator Oftel have revealed that 45 per cent of UK households are connected to the Internet, compared to a figure of 30 per cent at the same time last year. Oftel's review, of the Internet market, which shows that 11 million homes across the UK are connected, was published on Tuesday January 29.
