CHIEF CONSTABLE CONDEMNS RIOTING
RUC CHIEF CONSTABLE Sir Ronnie Flanagan has condemned those behind nationalist rioting which flared in the Ardoyne area on Thursday night, which saw a petrol station destroyed and more than 100 officers injured.
Disturbances began when police attempted to remove nationalist protestors from blocking the route of parade of Orangemen who were returning from Edenderry following the traditional 12 July gathering.
Nationalists have criticised the police over their handling of the situation, with SDLP councillor Martin Morgan describing the manner in which officers dealt with the protesters as “heavy and provocative”.
Sinn Fein assembly member for north Belfast, Gerry Kelly, who was present at the event described the protest as ‘peaceful’ but DUP MP Nigel Dodds accused the nationalist community of orchestrating an evening of “planned violence” against the RUC, describing the rioting as “a one-sided attack by a number of republican thugs”.
