Ford Welcomes Opening Of Security Barrier

Justice Minister David Ford has today welcomed the opening of the security barrier at the Newington Street and Limestone Road junction.

Mr Ford MLA, said: "Where local communities are willing to move forward, the Department of Justice and, indeed, other partners such as Belfast City Council and the Community Relations Council, will not be found wanting in providing support and encouraging further progress."

Opened this morning for the first time in over 20 years, the barrier will initially remain open from 7am to 4pm, Monday to Friday. A review of these arrangements will be undertaken after three months.

Mr Ford continued: "This is the culmination of months of work with the local community who wanted to have this barrier opened. Now that we have achieved this, we will continue to work with them so that, when the time is right, it can be removed completely."

The barrier was installed during the 1980's in response to disorder in the area. Under the draft Programme for Government, the Department of Justice is committed to actively seeking local agreement to reduce the number of interface structures.

The opening of this barrier follows the opening of a gate at the Alexandra Park interface structure in north Belfast last September.
