SOUTH AFRICA’S RETIEF GOOSEN WINS SCOTTISH OPEN

US Open champion Retief Goosen has won the Scottish Open title at Loch Lomond.

In a repeat of his Open win last month, the 32-year-old South African led the tournament from start to finish thus securing his £366,660 prize money.

The South African's total of 16-under-par left him three ahead of Denmark's Thomas Bjorn. Dungannon’s Darren Clarke finished with a round of 69, five shots of the pace.

However, the round of the day came from British amateur champion Michael Hoey. The 22-year-old from Northern Ireland was close to completing a new course record after notching seven birdies in his first nine holes. However, a dropped shot at the par-four 16th put paid to that and he had to settle for a 64 and seven-under-par total.

Hoey, who plays out of Shandon Park in Belfast, will soon head off to the US as part of Britain and Ireland’s Walker Cup team. (MB)
