New Chief Equality Commissioner Appointed
A new Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Equality Commission has been appointed.
Michael Wardlow, the former chief executive officer of the Northern Ireland council for integrated education, was appointed today and will take up his position from the March 1.
Currently Mr Wardlow works as a freelance consultant and will replace Bob Collins.
Secretary of State Owen Paterson said: "The new Chief Commissioner will bring with him skills, understanding and knowledge that will contribute greatly to the Commission’s work."
While Evelyn Collins, CBE, Chief Executive of the Equality Commission, said that everyone at the Commission was looking forward to working with the new Chief Commissioner.
"We are delighted that Michael Wardlow will be joining us as the new Chief Commissioner. He brings a wealth of experience that will enrich and strengthen the Commission’s important work to address inequalities."

The Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission is to get a new Chief Commissioner, it was announced today. In a statement to Parliament, Minister of State, John Spellar said the Government would begin a new process to recruit a new Chief Commissioner, to replace outgoing Professor Brice Dickson and maintain a full complement of Commissioners.

The new Chief Commissioner of the Northern Ireland Human Rights Commission (NIHRC), Les Allamby, is to begin his new post today (Monday 1 September). His first week in the role will start with the launch of public hearings into Accident and Emergency care in Northern Ireland.

Travellers Accommodation In NI To Be Investigated
The issue of Travellers accommodation in Northern Ireland is to be investigated by the Human Rights Commission. The Commission completed a scoping exercise in June which identified significant human rights concerns on a potentially systemic level. The Commission will publish its findings in the autumn of 2017.

Gay Adoption Ban Ruled 'Discriminatory'
A ban on gay and unmarried couples adopting in Northern Ireland is discriminatory, a High Court judge has ruled. Mr Justice Seamus Treacy said people in civil partnerships were being unfairly targeted by the ban. Currently, a single gay or lesbian person can adopt but a couple in a civil partnership cannot.
