McGUINNESS STRESSES IMPORTANCE OF COMMUNITY SPIRIT

EDUCATION Minister, Martin McGuinness has met with a group of Canadian university students to discuss ways of creating a greater sense of community among young people in Northern Ireland.

The students, from Trinity Western University in British Columbia, are visiting Ireland as part of their Irish Studies Programme. Speaking about the meeting, which was held on Monday 16 July, Mr McGuinness said: "My Department’s role in furthering community harmony among our young people is an issue I’m always happy to explore, and it is always illuminating to hear and learn from the experiences of citizens of other countries.

"My Department has an existing role in creating a greater sense of community among our young people, through programmes such as our Community Relations Core Funding Scheme and the Youth Service Community Relations Support Scheme."

Mr McGuinness also pointed out that the issue of citizenship education has been highlighted as part of a review of the curriculum here, and that the Council for the Curriculum, Examinations and Assessment has been given approval to develop a programme covering Education for Democracy and Citizenship.
