NTL SCRAP NI INVESTMENT PLANS

NTL is reported to have scrapped plans to proceed with a proposed £20 million investment in Northern Ireland.

The US communications group announced plans two years ago to build a call centre in Belfast, creating almost 900 jobs by 2003.

However the proposed investment in the Cabletel subsidiary has never been realised with the company not taking up the Industrial Development Board’s offer of a financial assistance package totalling nearly £4 million.

NTL first came to the province in 1996 and said it planned to spend £1bn on development as well as offering telephony access to 80 per cent of Northern Ireland by 2003. However, development has halted in both Londonderry and Belfast.

The group is currently working on cutting its £11bn debt and has delayed proposed projects in the UK and Ireland, including the rollout of digital services here. (MB)
