Woman Raped In Londonderry

Police are investigating reports of a rape in Derry at the weekend.

It is understood that a woman was seriously sexually assaulted between 12.30 am and 1.30am on Saturday morning by a man in his 20s.

The incident occurred in the Shipquay / Magazine Street area of the city.

The attacker is described to talk with a local Derry accent. At the time of the attack he was wearing a dark jacket, blue jeans and a T-Shirt with a checked shirt over the top.

SDLP Foyle MLA Pat Ramsey has hit out at the perpetrator.

He said: "Attacks of this nature are sickening and depraved.

"Victims carry the physical and mental scars with them their whole lives.

"It is imperative that anyone with any information gives it to the PSNI as a matter of urgency so that the vile individual behind this can be brought to justice as swiftly as possible.

"I would also call on people who know they are going to be out late in town to stay in a group of friends who can look after each other.

"In the meantime, I offer my support and good wishes to the victim and her family at this difficult time."
