Inquiry Into Children's Deaths To Begin

Investigations into the deaths of five children in Northern Ireland who died while being treated in hospital are set to get underway.

The first death being investigated in the inquiry happened nearly 18 years ago and it is around eight years since the inquiry was originally set up. For the families who lost children it has been an agonising wait.

The inquiry will investigate hyponatraemia-related deaths. Hyponatraemia is a condition which results in a low level of sodium in the blood stream causing the brain cells to swell with too much water. In some cases this action can result in death.

A series of delays have hampered the inquiry. It has been postponed several times including last November.
