Proposals Suggest NI Nama

Proposals have emerged, that if adopted, would see a new bank dealing with property debt being established in Northern Ireland.

This will be a Nama-style bank like that in the Republic of Ireland and it is hoped that its creation will make local banks more willing to lend to businesses.

The British Bankers’ association has made the call for the ‘debt bank’.

Nama in the South of Ireland (known fully as the National Assets Management Agency) bought out the toxic bank debt left in Irish banks after the property crash. Its job is to buy and then manage property loans, which had been made by the Dublin-based banks.

It is believed that a local arrangement, similar to Nama, could inspire confidence in the banking sector in Northern Ireland.
