Dissidents Retrieve Lost Policewoman's Phone
The mobile phone of a Northern Ireland policewoman, which was lost over a year ago, has fallen into the hands of dissident republicans it has been revealed.
The police officer’s missing phone, containing hundreds of photos and operational details, was handed into the office of The Irish News by Oglaigh na hEireann. The dissidents used a recognised code name when they passed the information to newspaper.
The phone had been lost during an arrest in west Belfast and it is understood that contained photographs of the officer and her colleagues, on and off duty. The mobile is also understood to have contained details of police operations and text messages revealing the officer's movements, working hours and family commitments.
The Irish News released the details in a front page exclusive yesterday. They said that they felt they should publish it to reveal the severity of the security breach.
Police say that they will be investigating thoroughly and there are implications surrounding the issue of whether PSNI officers on duty should carry their own mobile phones.
