NOKIA ANNOUNCES SLUMP IN PROFITS

MOBILE PHONE manufacturer Nokia has announced a 20 per cent slump in profits in line with a profit warning given in June.

The Finnish company bettered forecasts by revealing second-quarter profits at the high end of estimates, but predicted that sales growth for the third quarter would be worse, with estimates settling at around 0-5 per cent. The company did not reveal any projections for the fourth quarter, on the basis of a lack of long-term visibility in the sector’s economic climate.

Nokia has been hard hit by the combination of numerous adverse factors, including the saturation of Europe’s mobile phone markets, and increasing price pressure in the handset market.

Shares in Nokia rose briefly by almost 10% to 21.85 euros following the announcement, before returning to their previous level. (CL)
