Children Under 10 Treated For Eating Disorders

A number of children under the age of 10 have been treated for eating disorders in Northern Ireland.

According to a report by the BBC the Department of Health has not revealed the exact figures but up to 12 children under the age of ten were hospitalised in the three years between 2007 and 2010.

Nearly 80 teenagers have received hospital treatment for conditions such as anorexia in the past five years. Meanwhile 223 adults treated as in-patients between 2006/07 and 2010/11.

It is understood that millions of pounds are spent every year on adults and teenagers who travel to England for treatment.

Inquiry Hears Of Child Deaths In Local Hosptials
The deaths of five children while in hospital are being investigated as part of a public inquiry. The parents of nine-year-old Claire Roberts, who died in hospital in 1996, wept as details of her death were read out. The hearing was told that Claire was overdosed with medication and excess fluids.

NI Misses Cancer Treatment Targets
Northern Ireland's hospitals have failed to meet target times for the treatment of patients referred for suspected cancer, a new report by the Department of Health revealed. Its guidelines say 95% of patients should begin their treatment within 62 days. Last December however, the figure stood at 81%, which was the third monthly fall in a row.

Two Adults And Six Children Escape Injury In West Belfast Fire
Two adults and six children have escaped injury after a fire broke out at a property in west Belfast. Fire crews received reports to attend the blaze in the Falls Road area at around 6am on Wednesday. Two fire appliances attended the scene, however it was put out when they arrived.

26-Year-Old Jailed For 10 Years For Sexual Offences Against Children
The PSNI have welcomed a 10 year sentence handed down to Joshua Olphert at Coleraine Crown Court for a number of serious sexual offences against children. The 26-year-old from L'Derry was also placed on the Sex Offenders Register for an indefinite period and will be subject to a Sexual Offences Prevention Order (SOPO) for 10 years.
