PC SALES AT LOWEST POINT IN FIFTEEN YEARS

PC SALES have fallen for the first time in fifteen years, according to worldwide research by Gartner Dataquest.

The findings follow a series of second-quarter profit losses reported by many companies in the PC industry, which have been more severe than analysts’ forecasts.

Hewlett Packard posted a fall of 18.8 per cent, while Compaq reported a similar loss of -14.4 per cent, with IBM not far behind on -6.5 per cent. Only Dell defied the downward trend, to report a second-quarter sales increase of 13 per cent, thanks to a cost-reduction strategy aimed at negating the adverse effects of a slow-moving market.

Losses are thought to have been most severe in the US, which makes up almost 40 per cent of worldwide PC sales. Western Europe accounts for a further 20 per cent, but has recorded a similar slowdown, and market projections are not optimistic for third and fourth quarter gains.

Overall, worldwide PC purchases have fallen by 1.9 per cent to 30.4 million units in the second quarter in comparison to the same quarter in 2000. (CL)
