Scam Radon Letters Sent To Householders

Residents in the Newry area have reported receiving letters suggesting that it will be necessary to vacate their homes in mid-February in order to facilitate testing for radon gas.

The letters claim to be from the Department of Health, Social Services and Public Safety (DHSSPS) and appear to be signed by Health Minister Edwin Poots.

They prays on people's fears warning people saying "if you develop a facial rash, or experience nausea or vomiting during this period, you should consult your doctor at once,".

The Minister and the Department wish to make it clear that no such letter has been issued and any residents who receive such correspondence should report it to the police on 0845 600 8000.

A spokeswoman from the DHSSPS said: "Neither the Minister nor the Department have issued any such correspondence. Residents receiving these letters should report them to the PSNI for further investigation."

John Farrell, director of environment and health at Newry and Mourne District Council, said: "Someone has gone to a lot of trouble and used official Department of Health and Social Services headed paper.

"This is a scam, no such letter was sent by the department and anyone who receives such a letter should contact the police.

"No-one should allow anyone into their home if they do not know them."
