Ex-England international kicks off this year’s Milk Cup

Coleraine was basking in the international sporting spotlight as hundreds of young footballers from across the world paraded through the small County Londonderry town on Monday.

The occasion was the officially opening of the Milk Cup international football tournament by former England international, Peter Beardsley in front of 3,000 spectators.

With 51 teams on show, this year’s tournament is set to be the biggest ever. Unfortunately, the visiting Mexican team missed their connecting flight in San Fransisco, and so failed to attend the opening ceremony.

In the opening games to note the Northern Ireland Elite squad made a good start in their campaign by defeating Singapore 3-0 in Limavady. Roy Millar's team now face Craig Brown's Scotland on Tuesday at the Coleraine Showgrounds.

The travel-weary Mexicans meanwhile will make their long awaited Elite Milk Cup debut against Singapore on Tuesday night at Rugby Avenue in Coleraine. (MB)
